This motif originated as the “boteh” pattern in ancient Persia, where it symbolized the cypress tree, a flower, or a flame. It later appeared on luxurious Kashmiri shawls in India and became known as Kashmiri. When it reached the Levant, it was affectionately renamed Al-Louza (The Almond). Eventually, the pattern spread to Europe, where it took its Western name “Paisley” from the Scottish town famous for reproducing it.
